What were some of Queen Ranavalona of Madagascar's accomplishments?
Well, when she succeded her husband on his death on 1828, she quickly moved to reverse her husband’s liberal Europeanization policies. over a number of years she expelled all europeans, and eventually she had so purged the kingdom of outsiders that the British and French joined forces to unseat her. They were defeated at Tamatave in 1845. The queen ruled unmolested until her death in 1861. She ruled a total of 33 years.
That is what ‘Women who Ruled’ by Guida M, Jackson has to say about her. The book does not mention the fact that she was apparently an appallingly cruel woman, tortured and murdered huge numbers of her subjects(nearly half the population), and laid the country to waste. You can read about that in ‘Last Travels’ by ida Pfeiffer, if you can get hold of a copy. Mrs Pfeiffer visited Madgascar and saw Queen Ranavalona close up. Her impressions of the Queen and of Madgascar were extensively used in George macdonald Fraser’s novel Flashman’s Lady, the later part of which is set in Madgascar during her bloody reign.
