USS Enterprise question (Star Trek)?
Why does the color of the main deflector dish change from orange to blue in between Star Trek: The Motion Picture and The Wrath of Khan?
The Enterprise is still the original NCC-1701 refit until it is destroyed in Star Trek III.
Thanks, that does answer my question (partially). I still wish I could find a legitimate in-universe answer.

In the first movie "Star Trek: The Motion Picture, 1979", the navigational deflector would reflect a different color depending upon the the power level. On impulse power, the navigational deflector would be an orange (or yellow/orange, as noted by some). When the ship went to warp power, the navigational deflector would be blue. This convention (color change) wasn’t followed in later films (or tv series, such as TNG, etc.). In later films and tv series, the navigational deflector’s color is blue, irregardless of the speed. "Technically" speaking, my son says that the color change would have taken place due to technical and re-fit changes, which would have taken place during this time period (which logically makes sense); but we didn’t find any official quotes from the creators/directors of Star Trek or any official documented information to officially state why this convention changed between the release of "Star Trek: The Motion Picture" in 1979 and the release of "Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan" in 1982. (TNG wasn’t released until September 28, 1987). Hope this helps.

We found two quotes about the color change:

1. This one does not reflect the fact that the navigational deflector’s change in color, associated with the speed/power, is soley related to the "enterprise used in the original movie". "The deflector dish changes color depending on it’s setting. For low sub-light speeds, it’s essentially charged but not fully active, and glows a dull orange. Blue is its high power setting, used for high impulse and warp speeds." — http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n8PUyP0RY A0

2. This one is more specific about the color change being related to the "enterprise used in the original movie": "The yellow color meant the ship was on impulse power. The dish only went blue when the ship was on warp power. This convention was not followed in later films." — http://www.denofgeek.com/movies/193720/s tar_trek_the_motion_picture_directors_cu t_1979.html

ALSO, here’s a webpage with many links about different federation ships (and others). At the webpage, click on "Ships and Stations" and a range of choices will be provided for your leisure. — http://www.star-trek-voyager.net/article s.htm
